Ashghal awards QR1.5bn contracts

The biggest contract signed yesterday was for building roads for the under-construction Barwa City

Qatar’s Public Works Authority (Ashghal) yesterday awarded four major projects totalling over QR1.479bn.

The projects range from laying of new roads to sewage treatment to expansion of existing infrastructure and were won by a mix of local and international bidders.

“In addition to this public signing, Ashghal has been busy in rolling out many other projects.

So there’s a lot of work happening,” Ashghal president Nasser al-Mawlawi told reporters.

“Ashghal’s current projects are expected to be finished in five to seven years.

We will be ready for any upcoming challenge in the run up to the FIFA World Cup 2022,” al-Mawlawi said.

“There needs to be co-ordination with other entities responsible for 2022.” The biggest contract signed yesterday was for building roads for the under-construction Barwa City.

Bin Omran Trading and Contracting won the QR555.47mn job. Work involves construction of dual-lane roads totalling 22km for Barwa City, having 11 intersections and six roundabouts.

It will connect to north of Al Muntazah Street and west of Karwa Complex as well as F Ring Road. The project begins next month and is scheduled to finish in 540 days.

The second contract was to develop main roads in Zone 46.

It comprises the reconstruction of the Najma Road extension from its junction with the E Ring Road to just before the F Ring as well as construction of main roads and internal streets.

This QR360.20mn project was awarded to the joint venture of HBK Trading and QPS. It is expected to take 900 days. Work has already been underway starting from December 20, 2010. The third contract was for Temporary Package Treatment Plants (PTPs) at various locations and was won by Specialised Technical Services Company.

The project comprises the design, supply, procurement, construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance of three PTPs with the first one with a capacity to treat 10,000m3 per day of septage and the other two with the capacity of 5,000m3 per day.

Work, which begins in February, is expected to take 240 days. The last project, Doha West Sewage Treatment Project expansion, was won by an international joint venture of Degremont S A (France) and Marubeni Corporation (Japan).

The QR269mn project seeks to expand the treatment capacity from 135,000m3 per day to 175,000m3 per day, for an estimated population of 500,000 in and around West Sailiya. Work has already begun and is expected to last 660 days.
