Prompt action averts major fire disaster

TIMELY action by workers of a firm and Civil Defence personnel during a blaze, which broke out in the Al Hilal area yesterday at around 1.30pm, prevented it from spreading to a large tank filled with diesel.

When the fire broke out at a temporary on-site office of the Boom Construction Company, the workers threw sand on the flames till the fire brigade arrived and kept the diesel tank safe.

The fire brigade reached the site around 2.15pm, but stiff winds of up to 30kt made it difficult to bring the raging fire under control. There were no casualties.

Though the temporary facility was completely gutted by the time the flames were doused, the diesel tank was saved much to the relief of all on site.

According to sources, the company had set up the facility to oversee its operations in Doha and while the projects were nearing completion, the site was to be vacated soon.

A Civil Defence officer on the scene said the cause of fire could be a “possible short circuiting of electricity.”

An official of Boom Construction later told Gulf Times that the total loss was being estimated at QR200,000, while all the papers and office furniture were destroyed.
