Strategy devised to implement Vision 2030

CO-OPERATION and partnerships between government ministries, agencies and other key stakeholders for national development objectives will be strengthened to help realise the goals of the Qatar National Vision 2030, it was announced yesterday.

“Too often countries put off their national visions after much fanfare but that would not be the case with Qatar’s National Vision 2030,” General Secretariat for Development Planning (GSDP) secretary general Dr Ibrahim Ibrahim stated.

He was making the closing remarks at a two-day international seminar on Qatar’s National Vision (QNV) and the first National Strategy, which saw participation by more than 400 representatives from all sectors of Qatari society, as well as international delegates.

“Many countries formulate a National Vision; however, too often it has found a place on the shelf. I say it with total conviction and utmost importance that (QNV) won’t end up on shelf,” Dr Ibrahim said.

The National Strategy will provide a medium-term framework to move the state towards the realisation of the Vision 2030, which was launched on Tuesday by HH the Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani.

GSDP will co-ordinate the strategy formulation process with higher authorities and in full partnership with stakeholders from civil society, private and public sectors. It is expected to be launched in 2010.

“A lot was said and heard here (conference) and we assure everyone that this wealth of information and ideas will be of great benefit to us in the stages ahead,” Dr Ibrahim said.

“We would like everyone to partner with us in this regard, from university students to housewives to teachers, because at the end, results won’t be achieved if they don’t own it,” he added.

He said that owning the project was important for accountability. “All plans and programmes should have their owners.”

Thanking all the participants, the official announced that QNV had already had the support of UN’s Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA).

Experts from other GCC countries and Asia shared their experiences in building national strategies.
